Vukovar is a city in eastern Croatia, located at the mouth of the river Vuka in the Danube, with about 32,000 inhabitants. In the 10th century the fortress of Vukovo was founded, around which a city gradually developed. As of the 14th century, the city bears its present name. The region around Vukovar was the most heavily contested area in the Croatian independence war (1991-1995). The city was largely destroyed during the Serbian siege and the battle of Vukovar (18-19 November 1991).
