Lofoten / Norway

The Lofoten is an archipelago consisting of approximately 80 islands, located off the coast of Norway. Their name in German means as much as the "foot lynx". The islands lie approximately 100 to 300 kilometers north of the Arctic Circle in the Atlantic Ocean, the most important among them are connected by bridges or tunnels. First settlements date about 6000 years back in time. During the Viking Age on the Lofoten arose several settlements with chief courts. The exceptiona herring l occurrence in 1860 the islands owe to their present settlement.

Countless Orcas annually spend the winter in the fjords of the islands and can be seen as part of a boat tour up close. In Borg, where an old chief yards from the Viking Age was dug up today is a very interesting Viking Museum. A particularly memorable experience is a trip to the island of Moskenes. The Moskstrømmen is one of the most rapid maelstroms in the world and takes you to the outer coastal areas of Lofoten. In the Refsvika Cave on Moskenes you can then marvel at the more than 3000-year-old rune drawings.
