Toronto, Ontario / Canada

Toronto is the largest city in Canada and capital of the province of Ontario. To the south, the Toronto metropolitan area with its 5.2 million inhabitants is bordered by the 19,011 km² Lake Ontario. The indigenous people called the place Tarantua, which means meeting place. They held their meetings here. In the 17th century, fur hunters used the meeting place for their business and the British governor Simcoe built a fort at the commercial transshipment center. The settlement, which was still known as York, developed only slowly. The rise of the city began only in the 1850s, when York was connected by rail to the markets in the USA.

1346/5000 Only a few of the many attractions in Toronto can be mentioned here. The world famous CN Tower is the tallest freestanding building in the world, with a height of 553 m. At a height of 346 m is a restaurant with a glass floor wherefrom you can take a look at the city. The Royal Ontario Museum is the largest museum in Canada and presents extensive collections of natural sciences, archeology, art and cultural history. It gained world fame mainly through its art collection from the Far East. The science department is home to spectacular dinosaur skeletons. Toronto also has a major art gallery, the "Art Gallery of Ontario", the "Thompson Hall" concert hall for the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, as well as an immense number of theaters. In addition to the overwhelming cultural offer, the surroundings of the city are also characterized by unique natural spectacles. About 100 km from Toronto, the waters of Niagara Falls crash into the depths. Some 100 km north of the city is the Algonquin Natural Park opened in 1891  where you can discover a true picture book Canada: trees and water as far as the eye can see and of course bears, elks, beavers and other wild animals. The park can only be crossed by foot and by canoe.
