The city center of the Hanseatic city Zutphen, whose silhouette is shaped by many towers, is especially worth seeing and possesses many historical buildings, among which the medieval Great St. Walburgis Church (St.Walburgskerk from the 12th Century). The collection of the historical library (Librije) of this church consists of chained books from the years 1450-1600. A ruin of the Berkel Gate (around 1320) spans the same-named river of the same name in a city park. Further buildings worth a visit: Drogenaps Gate (1444), Bourgonje Tower (1457), Winehouse Tower (1618-1642), Dominican Church (1300), New City Church (1250-1530), about 300 houses from the 13th - 16th century. The city museum (Stedelijk museum Zutphen) has often very remarkable temporary exhibitions. Other sights are the former Broederen Monastery from the 14th century, the Stadhuis from the 18th century, the Groenmarkt and the salt market.
