Zwolle / Netherlands

Zwolle has about 116,000 inhabitants and is the capital of the Dutch province of Overijssel. The town lies at the mouth of the Vecht and IJssel, at the Zwarte Water, a 20-km-long river, which originates from Zwolle itself. First traces of settlement date back to the Neolithic period. In 1230, the former Hanseatic city of Zwolle received its city rights. Heyday was the 15th century when Zwolle was one of the strongholds of book printing.

A walk through the city center takes you past numerous beautiful houses from the 17th and 18th centuries, which can be found among others in the Thorbeck Canal and on Melk Market. The Sassenpoort ("Saxon Gate"), which can partly be visited from the inside dates back to 1408. At the Great Market stands St. Michael's Church. This Gothic hall church built between 1406 and1466 whose tower collapsed in 1682 damaged by the effects of multiple lightning strikes, houses in its interior an organ of the famous north German organ builder Arp Schnitger (born in the mid-17th century, his exact birth date is unknown), the tower of the Church of Our Lady, which was built in four phases in the 14th and 15th centuries, is called Peperbus ("pepper shaker") because of its shape and is now the symbol of the city.
