Do I need baggage insurance?
Your baggage will of course be handled with the necessary care while it is in custody. Please note, however, that we cannot rule out the possibility of loss or damage to your luggage or property. If Holland America Line is liable for the loss, damage or delay of your property due to any cause, the maximum amount to be paid by Holland America Line per guest per bag will be $250. This applies to a maximum of two pieces of luggage per guest for cruises of up to 14 days and up to a maximum of three pieces of luggage per guest for cruises longer than 15 days. If you are interested in this option, you can contact your travel agent for more information.
Are there non-smoking areas?
To better accommodate guests' needs and health concerns, Holland America Line is implementing a new smoking policy starting January 2017. Below you will find the details.
Smoking policy as of January 2017:
As ofJanuary 2017, the following smoking policy will come into force on all ships' first voyages:

uests comfort is important, so all cabins, screening rooms and other interior spaces are designated as non-smoking areas. Smoking of any kind is not permitted on any balcony cabin.Unless otherwise noted, designated smoking areas on all ships include the following areas:

Only at the bar of the pool area (resting place) on the starboard side with sea view. On the Koningsdam and Nieuw Statendam, smoking is only permitted on the port side.

In the event of repeated violations, the guest risks being expelled from the ship.Holland America Line reserves the right to change the rules regarding smoking on board or the locations where smoking is permitted at any time.
Can I get medication or prescriptions on board?
Take enough medication with you. Make sure you have enough prescription medications to last for the duration of the cruise. Always carry them with you and remember to leave all medications in their original package. It is also a good idea to bring your vaccination certificate and the prescription for your glasses or contact lenses with you.Always keep medications handy in your purse or carry-on luggage. Bring enough prescription medicines to last for the duration of the cruise, as they may not be available on board and in some of the countries visited.
Always keep prescription medications within easy reach in your purse or carry-on luggage rather than in checked luggage. Make sure you bring enough of your medication with you and keep it in its original package. Additionally, it is a good idea to have a written list of medications with you in case the medication goes missing. The list should include the name of the medication, dosage and number of daily doses. In emergencies,
Holland America Line will help you fill prescriptions.
However, please note that in this case additional fees will apply. Prescribing marijuana for medical purposes is not permitted on board. Possession of marijuana, including by prescription, is a violation of the laws of the United States and may be a violation of the laws of the country the vessel is visiting and may result in reporting to law enforcement authorities. Prescription of Marinol, an alternative to marijuana, is permitted on board.
Can I extend my cruise?
Yes. Holland America cruise lines offer special hotel packages that can be used before or after the cruise, giving you the opportunity to enjoy a few more wonderful vacation days in the port at the start of your cruise or after the cruise ends. Some of the most beautiful destinations are within your reach, both before and after your cruise. Why not allow a little extra time and extend your experience with an expertly guided tour? Or go on a discovery tour on your own and start with a first-class hotel.
Can you get seasick?
This rarely happens. Cruises usually take place in calm waters. Modern ships also have stabilizers and are provided with the latest weather forecasts. Preventive medication for seasickness significantly reduces any discomfort you may experience.
Do I have to take part in the activities?
Every day aboard a Holland America cruise ship offers numerous activities and enjoyment, and you have the freedom to take part in as many – or few – as you like. On a Holland America Line cruise you can do what you want, when you want. You are free to participate in all activities or simply do absolutely nothing. You have the choice.Holland America recommends exploring the variety of activities on offer to find the ones you enjoy most.
Emergency drills for passengers
Passenger emergency drills are conducted in the port of departure before the ship departs so that all guests know where to go and what to do in the event of an alarm. During this exercise, passengers are given clear instructions in the event of an emergency, such as: how to find their assembly point, the most important rules of conduct in emergencies and how to put on life jackets. These exercises are mandatory for all passengers and failure to do so may result in disembarkation. A passenger safety video will be broadcast on the guest channel as of  embarkation and up to 24 hours after departure.

Holland America Line offers activities for children and teenagers, as well as facilities specifically designed for younger guests, such as the Kids Club, the Kids Club Playroom and The Loft. Additionally, children and families always love the wide variety of dining options available for them aboard Holland America Line.

If you become ill or injured during the voyage and diagnostic and/or treatment needs cannot be met by the onboard medical center, you will be referred to shore-based medical facilities. Please note that the costs of medical treatment at sea, abroad or for air transportatiom home are NOT covered by many state and private health insurance companies.Guests are recommended to take out travel health insurance before traveling so that any services may be reimbursed. If you suffer from chronic illnesses, please bring a current report from your doctor. Medical staff on board are not available to provide daily care unless you are at the medical center for inpatient treatment. You must be able to care for yourself, including dressing, eating and attending onboard safety drills. If you are unable to do this without assistance, you must be accompanied by a caregiver.
Due to limited medical facilities, infants under 6 months of age at the start of the cruise and women who will reach 24 weeks of pregnancy or more during  the cruise are not permitted to participate in the cruise. If you are pregnant, please bring a report from your doctor stating your expected due date and your fitness to travel.Infants must be at least 6 months old at the time of embarkation to travel. Children must be at least 12 months old at the time of embarkation on ocean crossings and remote routes that involve spending more than 2 consecutive days at sea.Always keep medications handy in your purse or carry-on luggage. Bring enough prescription medicines to last for the duration of the cruise, as they may not be available on board and in some of the countries visited.
What child care and youth programs are offered?
Holland America Line offers a youth program for guests ages 3 to 17. On every ship, a Kids Club leader ensures that the children on board have a lot of fun. Activities include, among others: Bingo with prizes, arts and crafts, special parties and much more. All participants will also receive a Kids Club T-shirt. Every evening a special program for the relevant age groups is brought to your cabin.Activities are offered for young children (3 to 7 years old), children (8 to 12 years old) and teenagers (13 to 17 years old). The program has an open-door policy, allowing participants to come and go as they please. All activities are supervised. However, the Kids Club leader is not responsible if a child decides to no longer participate in an activity.
How is my cabin furnished?
The cabins are equipped with ship-to-shore telephones so you can easily call anywhere in the world 24 hours a day (prices can be found in the appropriate directory in the cabin). Self-service minibars can be found in every cabin on Eurodam, Koningsdam, Nieuw Amsterdam, Nieuw Statendam, Noordam, Oosterdam, Westerdam and Zuiderdam and in the veranda cabin categories and above on all other ships. Holland America Line recommends not storing medications in the minibar. Please contact the ship's medical center if you need to store medications in the refrigerator. In addition, your cabin offers plenty of storage space in closets and drawers, individually controlled air conditioning and a television with onboard programs, movies and CNN. All cabins are equipped with a safe.
All cabins are equipped with regular US 110V AC and European 220V AC outlets. If your razor runs on standard 110-volt AC power, be sure to bring it with you (guests with pre- or post-cruise hotel arrangements should bring a power converter and/or adapter for their stay). Since the cabins are not equipped with alarm clocks, you may want to bring a travel alarm clock. Hairdryers are available in cabins on all ships. For safety reasons, travel irons, steamers and electric kettles are not permitted in your cabin. You can order hot water 24 hours a day with our free cabin service.
How can I board and disembark with mobility aids?
For people with limited mobility, a wheelchair is the crucial mobility aid so that they can get on or off the ship. Some vessel transfer procedures (e.g. gangway or transportation by smaller support boats) may not be fully accessible for wheelchairs or mobility scooters. If a ship cannot dock, travelers are brought ashore by smaller support boats. Some passengers with limited mobility may find it difficult to disembark or embark when transferring to support boats or docking due to steep gangways or steps, particularly at low or high tide. Please also note that the staff are not permitted to transport mobility scooters or wheelchairs that weigh more than 45 kg without a battery from the ship to a support boat and/or from the support boat to land. The tender ports of call are specified in the details of each itinerary in the Plan a Cruise section on our website and in the itinerary details on your booking information.
